About UsBrightly colored with sunny windows and student work displayed, the art room is a multifaceted learning environment, shifting focus from studio time to art history, critique to career awareness. With an interdisciplinary approach, I connect many projects to class curriculum, from a second grade mixed media project about New York, to a fourth grade project about animal camouflage. “Real life” lessons related to fashion merchandising and commercial design reveal a world of opportunity. The learning also extends
beyond the classroom. Field trips to the MOMA and El Museo del Barrio expose students to the artistic experiences offered only in New York City. Students attending the field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art explore the art and history of Ancient Egypt. Each fall, the 6th grade art class designs and paints the scenery for the middle school musical. This is a room where creativity flows, and art skills are learned. Our elective model allows serious arts students to take art 2 times a week, allowing for rigorous, in depth study of visual arts. Eighth graders can take an additional intensive portfolio-driven studio art class. In the fall, students may also opt into an art after-school program for additional enrichment. Our model guarantees success. Around 10% of the student body is accepted into selective fine arts high schools, such as, Art and Design and the High school of Fashion Industries. |
